5k Road Race for Pulmonary Hypertension
5k Road Race for Pulmonary Hypertension: race description
The 5k Road Race for Pulmonary Hypertension was started three years ago by a past brother of Lambda Chi Alpha, Riley Kelly, whose sister was diagnosed with this disease a little over 10 years ago. In its third year (and hopefully with your help) we are set to make this the best year yet! The purpose of this event is threefold:
First, to raise awareness and support for Pulmonary Hypertension which is one of the most overlooked and misunderstood diseases as it affects only 1-2 per million people in the US and Europe. But for those who have it, the symptoms affect every part of life – shortness of breath, dizziness, extreme fatigue, and pressure in the chest are the main symptoms. Simply put, the more we know, the more people we can help.
Second, to raise money for the University of Denver, Colorado, an organization that has become a forefront leader in the research for cures and treatments of Pulmonary Hypertension. We have paired with them the past two years and they have been incredibly thankful for our efforts. Here is the link for more information: UC Denver
Third, to bring our Elon community together for an incredibly worthy cause. This event is completely open to the public and we welcome anyone to the race. Whether you want to run the race competitively, walk it with some friends, or simply hang out at the finish line while cheering on the runners, this race is for everyone! Furthermore, it will help Elon because it is a fantastic 100% student run philanthropy event. And this, in my mind, strikes at the heart of one of Elon’s core tenants: students giving back and serving our greater community. We are truly living out what it means to be a member of this great institution.
Thank you so much for supporting us in our fight against Pulmonary Hypertension! We will see you on Friday, April 22nd for the race!
