Beat the Heat 5K: race description

Directed by Twin City Track Club, Beat the Heat is one of the most popular races in North Carolina. It was twice selected by Endurance Magazine as the best 5K in Triad NC and was featured in Running Journal magazine as the #1 “Under the Radar” race in the South. The evening start time and festive atmosphere make the event popular with all levels of runners. Each year, close to 100 participants run their very first 5K at Beat the Heat. And more than 50 elite runners will compete in the NC USATF 5K Championship. The race will start and finish near Wake Forest’s BB&,T Field and Bridger Field House at 7:00pm. Stick around after the race for pizza, subs, and beer. You can sign up as an individual or create your own social team to run. Sign up now and be part of the fun!

Race registration includes a custom designed technical shirt by Champion. When registering, participants have the option to choose a 2017 BTH shirt, a prior year BTH shirt, or no shirt ($5 fee reduction).  2017 shirts will be available for the first 600 people that register.  Men and Women styles available in sizes Small through Extra Large.

5K Course Information

5K USATF Certified (NC11048PH) , USATF Sanctioned, RRCA sanctioned, course is predominately flat and fast. Traffic will be monitored.  There is a small uphill climb in the first half mile, then downhill to the one mile mark.  The elevation continues to drop until about 1.5 miles and then begins a gradual ascension.  There a couple of slight rolling hills near the 2 mile mark.  The last mile is a gradual downhill to the finish.

Splits will be given every mile. Digital Clock at finish.

The awards presentation will be held immediately following the race.

 NC-USATF Prize Money: $5,250

Open: (Men and Women)  1st –, $1,000, 2nd –, $500, 3rd –, $200, 4th –, $150, 5th –, $125, 6th –, $100, 7th –, $75, 8th –, $50

Masters: (Men and Women): 1st $150, 2nd $100, 3rd $50

Grand Masters: (Men and Women): 1st $75, 2nd $50

No double dipping.  If someone places in two categories, the awarded placement will be the one where they win the most money. 

 To be eligible for USATF awards, athletes must be full time 12 month resident of NC and a member of the USATF North Carolina Association.  USATF eligibility will be verified after the race. Cash prizes will be mailed to winners after eligibility has been confirmed for all USATF award winners and final verification of times and placement.

Course and State Record Prizes

A bonus prize of $200 will be offered for setting a new course record. Current Beat the Heat 5K records:

A bonus prize of $1,000 will be offered for setting a new NC USATF state record in the open division for 5K distance. Record must be recognized as official by USATF to receive the prize money. Current NC records:

      Open Female ­ Laura Mykytok 15:50 (1994)

 Age Group Awards

Age Group Awards will win a Beat the Heat Glass, provided for the top 3 finishers (excluding USATF participants) in the following age groups.

 14 and under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70 and over

 Beat the Heat discontinued the WAVA Age-Graded competition in 2013.

 Fun Run Awards

Trophies for the top Fun Run finishers.

Finisher awards for all one mile Fun Run participants.

 Awards presentation held immediately following the race and will not be mailed. 

First Time 5K Runners

Finishers who complete their first ever 5K race at Beat the Heat will be presented with special finisher certificates after the race.  Participants must pre-register to receive a First Time 5K certificate.

One Mile Fun Run Course Information

The Fun Run course uses the same start and finish as the 5K.  The course has a turnaround at approximately 1/2 mile and is very flat. Traffic will me monitored.

Packet Pickup and Late Registration

Runners can register at packet pickup on Friday before the race at Fleet Feet Winston-Salem or on Saturday at the Race Site.

Race Timing

The 5K race will have a “,gun start”, and chip timed finish.  This means that all participants will have the same start time, and that the finish time will be recorded as each runner crosses the finish line, by reading the chip on the back of your numbered bib.  The 5K race has a very wide start line which enables all runners to get across the start line in a matter of seconds after the starting gun sounds.  Timing servcies will be provided by Ultimate Race Management.  

The One Mile Fun Run will have a clock at the finish line, but individual times are not recorded for this event.

USATF 5K Championship Information and Course

Beat the Heat is proud to host the NC USATF 5K Championship.  To enhance the Championship experience and spectating, this race will be run as a separate event immediately following the regular Beat the Heat 5K race.  The Championship course is modified layout with 3 laps, utilizing the same finish line, but different start line as the regular 5K.  A course map can be viewed in the attached pdf. 5K USATF Certified (NC16033DF) , USATF Sanctioned, RRCA sanctioned

To be eligible for USATF awards, athletes must be a current USATF NC member and a 12-month resident of North Carolina.  For information on the Series and updates, please check

Weather Policy

If the races should be cancelled, delayed or postponed for any reason outside the direct control of the Race Director (inclement weather, local, state or national emergency, or conditions on the race course), refunds will not be given, but arrangements will be made for participants to pick up their shirts.

Event Purpose

The purpose of the Beat the Heat 5K is to promote fitness and health, and improve the quality of life for individuals and families.  To strengthen this purpose, two nonprofit Charity Partners will be selected to share in event proceeds.  Selected Charity Partners need to have a direct impact on community health and fitness.  In particular, we are seeking those with a special focus on youth and/or disadvantaged persons.  See the Donate Page for more information regarding this year’s Charity Partners.

Beat the Heat is hosted by the Twin City Track Club.  The Twin City Track Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting running and fitness in the Winston-Salem, North Carolina area. Our members are a cross-section of the community, representing runners and walkers of all abilities. Since our founding in 1977, we have used a number of methods to achieve our goals. We have group activities to promote the social aspects of running, we bring in nationally known speakers to educate and inspire, and we assist other organizations with their organized running events.
