Sickle Cell 5k Walk: race description

This 5K is established to create a greater awareness in the South Florida community about Sickle Cell Disease and to raise funds for patient care, social services, and research. A portion of the proceeds from this event will directly benefit individuals living with Sickle Cell by donating to The Foundation for Sickle Cell Disease and Research. The ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life for individuals living with this disability and ultimately raise enough money to find a cure. While the event is fun, the purpose is serious.

Story of a Warrior

My name is Kevenique Allen, Founder and President of Dezire Fashions Inc. For the past 24 years, I have struggled with the immobilizing disease of Sickle Cell anemia. This disease affects millions of people around the world, and in the United States. It most commonly occurs in people with African ancestry. In the US, there are over 70,000 individuals with sickle cell disease and millions with sickle cell trait. As a recent graduate of Florida Atlantic University with bachelor’s degree in Business Management, it was a challenge for me to get through my course work. Because of the unannounced and painful crisis that I would experience in the middle of the school year, most of the time causing me to complete my homework in the hospital just to keep up. It took me 5 years what would take most 4. I was very limited on my activities and often excluded myslef from different events because of my ailment. The struggle mostly came when school began to be stressful and would enable a painful crisis. Most mornings it was too painful to even move from the bed. With the determination to finish and the support of my family I completed my degree on May 5th, 2016. Other patients are not so lucky.

Due to the effects that this disease has had on my life I have decided to use my story and my gift of fashion and design to bring awareness to this debilitating disease. My goal is to also provide support to patients and research in order to see advancement in a cure of this sickness. On January 29, 2017 I will be hosting a 5k walk and family fun festival on the beautiful campus of Florida Atlantic University as a kick off to a strong campign in support of the fight against Sickle Cell aneima. It is my hope that you would lock arms with me and the millions of people effected by the disease across the world with the mission to cure and save a life.
