Good afternoon,

How to "feed" my knees in order not to feel discomfort after a long-term running? Usually, I drink BAAs (glucosamine and chondroitin) but the effect lasts 1-2 months only.

Good day,

Intake of BAAs is an absolutely justifiable measure. In my opinion, the fact that the effect lasts 1-2 months is really not bad at all. There are not so many substances that can keep their action for longer period of time.

As per discomfort in knees after long-term running - if we exclude pathology - I venture to suggest it's just a usual body's response to the load. Simply put, we can consider a discomfort as an adaptive process. I think, if you feel discomfort only after long-term running, there is no reason to worry.

However, I can recommend you to apply cold compress to the area of discomfort for 5-7 minutes in order to relieve discomfort right after a long training session. Also, after "cold bath" you can use such thermal recovery procedures as sauna or warm bath. Massage has a positive effect on the whole musculoskeletal system as well.

Old Partial Meniscal Tear
Question:

Good afternoon,

MR showed old partial meniscal tear.

Sharp pain occurred after running a 9 km and I had to complete my half-marathon distance by walking with broad strides or switching to a race walking in order not to feel the pain.

During a half year I had three attacks of pain. But there was no pain after short runs (7-10 km). Now I gave my knee a week to rest and recover.

What can you recommend? How to recover and return to the earlier level? I'll have to run another race and hope I won't damage the meniscus absolutely(((.

Recovery after "Light" Injuries
Question:

Good afternoon.

I run a little over half-year. Taking my fitness level and frequency of trainings into consideration I can say that I'm a novice, not even amateur runner.

Unfortunately, even during this short period I had injuries. A month ago I pulled ligaments of ankle joint in the result of failed landing (my leg slipped), it hurt for a long time. Now a new misfortune: a discomfort in the area of hip joint is felt for a couple of days.

These injuries are not so serious to consult a doctor, so I use ointment and do breaks in training. Now I more or less understand something about prevention but when injuries happens...Are there any working exercises or other rehabilitation methods that should be used but not after severe injuries?

Thank you!

Knee Pain, Leg Numbless
Question:

Tendon injury, ligaments injury or ligament tension?

I trained on a conrete (25 km twice or three times a week) and after that I felt knee pain and my legs became numb from knees to feet. I felt a dragging pain in a week. It's been three months since then but the knee pain doesn't go away provided that there were no sharp pain, tumours, bruise, X-ray was clear. I'd taken a course of anti-inflammatory pills (glucosamin, collagen and chondroitin in complex).

What can it be?
