In September I finished my first marathon in 4 hours and 55 minutes.

Is it possible to run a marathon under 3:30 after a year or is a one-year training plan not enough to achieve the goal?

Good afternoon.

It's not a bad result for the first marathon. I need more information to give a forecast and it will be only a forecast. I don't see how you coped with a marathon, namely what your pulse was during a marathon, what your initial fitness level was before the start and how you trained for. And many other things...

Therefore, I can't say whether or not it is possible for you to reach time goal you set (3:30 marathon) if you train for during a year.

I would recommend you to base on your actual state during training not on your plans (though they are needed and can serve as a kind of strategic goal). I mean it makes a sense to take into account such a factor as an absence of injuries or diseases because they usually don't allow an athlete to finish the whole training cycle which is the most important component of successful training for a marathon.

First of all, you should be guided by the growth of functional capabilities of your body and other progress indicators when training for a marathon. Then you can correct your strategic time goal or take it as a basis without changes.

First Marathon
Question:

Oleg Sergeevich, good afternoon.

I run half-marathons regularly, my personal record is 1:52:00.

I've finished running season and plan to return to running trainings in spring (in late March or in the beginning of April). I have several questions:

  1. What date should I choose for my first marathon's start considering that I plan to return to running trainings in March and let's assume that I'll start to train for a marathon since 1st April? I would like to prepare good, it doesn't mean quickly because my main goal is to run a marathon without injuries.
  2. Could you give me some recommendations on training plan: frequency of trainings per week, weekly running volume? How will the weekly running mileage change every month?
  3. What's number of speed trainings a week? How many long runs should I do?

Thank you.
